Sussex are the County Champions of 2003!

The presentation of the trophy will take place after play on Friday 19 September, everyone welcome!

2001 was a great year for Sussex. We won the Championship Division II title and with it promotion to the First division. 2003 is an even better year because the promise that was undoubtedly shown in 2001 was proved and now the team have raised the Championship trophy for Sussex.

We have had spectacular displays from every member of the team, if one stumbled another would take on the baton and raise the game. Each and every player has contributed to the team's success and that is the key - team spirit, the ability to play as a single unit rather than individuals, that was our greatest strength.

Many congratulations to Chris Adams and his team who played match winning cricket, to the backroom staff who give the team something to work with, the Sussex Members and supporters who truly deserve this mighty accolade and to all those young cricketers who are coming up through the ranks and who will provide us with more trophies to celebrate in the future. This year Sussex have provided a great team role model... you can achieve the ultimate with the right team spirit.

Thanks also to all those opposition supporters who have the grace to congratulate us on our season and Championship success. It is so much easier to gripe and detract and we appreciate the good sportsmanship camaraderie. Leicestershire have been wonderful today, full of good humour and best wishes.

This moment belongs to Sussex, we are the Champions and are going to enjoy it!

Living legend, Phil Tufnell, will be down at the County Ground on Friday evening when he does his Radio 5 Live show from The Cricketers pub garden! Guests will include a number of the Sussex team and a few surprises have been promised, so either tune in or get down to the pub on Friday evening.

Leics will resume batting today still 397 runs behind...

Leics 1st innings 179 all out
Leics 2nd innings 38/2 (in progress)

Sussex 1st innings 614/4 declared

What a great day for Sussex! Now all we need is our Division 2 trophy returned to Withdean in May!
