Hillage. I was at that. He noodled on stage with fans after the finale. Quaint :lolol:

Yes, I must confess that I was one of the fans doing the noodling up on stage. He shook my hand! I was young (14) and impressionable at the time. After the gig I walked up to Brighton station to get the bus home, my head obviously still giddy by the moment. I got on the bus thinking it was going to Hove and I ended up in Newhaven. It caused my parents some consternation when I hadn't returned home by the expected time. Must have thought I'd decided to run away with the rock and roll band.

For decades these were my favourite band. Blathered on previously....connection with my locale....magical....

This, with cousin Richard on vocals, as it was ever better. Magnificent.

Probably THE song of the early 80s for me. Absolute pleasure to see a version of the band do this live a couple of years ago. Little bro is visible in the audience in the 1982 concert video (DVD).

Cheesy 80s pop and an odd pick given the greatness of these boy's ouvre. I'll add another from their early era later.

But this is one of my exile songs, when I lived overseas and lost contact with my former life, Hove, my old mates, the Albion....poinant. And a magnificint song.

Another absolute classic. English music at its finest. RIP Adrian (who took his life after a long battle with mental health problems - all there in his lyrics)

Never heard that before, stunning.

It’s got that haunting mix of bass and 6 string guitar, synonymous with Joy Division, The Cure, The Danse Society, etc, etc.

As you say, English music, we’re lucky to be at the centre of all that.

Also this, stunning vocals from Liz Fraser.

I love this live version from the song's original song co-writer Tim Buckley (father of Jeff). It's more stripped back than the studio version on his album Starsailor. This performance is from the final episode of the Monkees TV show in 1968 with an introduction, by the sound of it, by Davy Jones.

Edit: I've just this moment discovered that the first person to record the song was Pat Boone of all people! I think you will probably agree that he hasn't quite captured the intended mood of the song with the military marching drum and brass instrumentation and climatic finale....and as for the "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum".

That Pat Boone version is probably close to being the worst cover of any song.

To restore the standard here's a much better cover of the song
