David Stockdale has warned the doubters there is “no chance” Albion will slip out of promotion contention after a dressing room rallying cry to his team-mates.
The keeper and captain Gordon Greer urged their colleagues to bounce straight back from the 3-0 defeat at home to leaders Middlesbrough at Brentford on Boxing Day.
Boro ended Albion’s 21-match unbeaten run in the Championship in emphatic fashion, inflicting their heaviest defeat ever at the Amex.
The Seagulls have dropped to third in the Championship below Boro and Derby after leading the way for much of the first half of the season and Stockdale knows critics will now be writing them off.
He told The Argus: “The disappointment is there but that’s good and, like I said to the boys, what we’ve done is nothing short of brilliant. The real test starts now and that’s how we come back from this.
“Are we going to slip down? Have we got the character to prove people wrong? Because I think a lot of people will be saying ‘That’s it for Brighton now, they’ve gone’.
“But no. Me and GG had a word with the lads after the gaffer said his bit. We said: ‘We have character, we need to build on what we’ve done.’ “That’s exactly what people will say, Brighton have done their bit and now they are slipping out. No chance.
“I’ll be making sure all week in training and reiterating that it’s a big one on Boxing Day, if you have got Christmas presents to open or not you turn up on Boxing Day.”
Two of Boro’s goals were headers via corners. Albion also conceded headers from corners in the previous two draws at Derby and QPR.
“Even when we were winning we were concerned,” Stockdale said. “We spoke about it. It shouldn’t be happening.”
