No idea at present. We were loosing 1-0 after an early mistake by Mayo -- nothing different there then!

Teams; Stevenage, Burch, Warner[Goodlife 35mins] Gould, Hocking[Schillaci 77mins] Rogers, Brady[Hodgson 62mins] Quinn{brough H/T] Bulman, Boyd[Hanlon 62mins] Elding [Flack 64mins] Nurse [Maamria 64mins]

Brighton, Roberts[Kuypers H/T] Piper, Rents, Al-Abd, Mayo, Reid[Knight H/T] Currie, Nicholas, Robinson[Hammond 50mins] Lee. Jarrett[Beck 58mins.

Stevenage goal from corner RH side taken by Brady and headed in from the edge of 6 yd box by the unchallenged Hocking in the 37min. Bulman free kick 2 mins later drew a fine full length save from Roberts at expense of another corner. At the other end Lee forced Burch [on loan from Spurs] to a good save from close range.

2nd half. Knight came on for Reid and B'ton seemed to play 4-3-3. Knight quickly showed his class and speed but was well marshalled by the Boro defence, in particular Rogers who had been sent off at the Withdean the last time he played against Knight!

Had it not been a PSF there may have been a couple of bookings as both sides kept possession and played the ball around. Kuipers made two good 2nd half saves. For B'ton Jarrett looked good and fast and aquitted himself well, for the short time he was together with Knight it looked like it may be a fast and dangerous partnership. Must say Boro defence rarely looked tested during the 90mins. An enjoyable evening but fancy Boro's promotion chances higher than B'ton's!!

Not really much surprise at this result given the team we put out, Boro are a decent Conference outfit after all.

That said, it didn't make pretty viewing no matter what spin you put on it! The overall point, I guess, is that the depth of our squad is not strong, but I guess we knew that anyway.

Very little of our team units performed well - our midfield was very poor, our defence was disorganised at set pieces (which led to the defeat), and our attacking play was limited to a couple of bright displays by Jarrett and Lee, and obviously Leon when he came on in the 2nd half was a class above everything else on the pitch but had precious little support.

The real headline news I guess is the mixed fortunes of the triallists.

Darren Currie. Oh dear! This player looks absolutely shot as a wide player in the Football League. Is he unfit? Has his legs gone? Whatever, he's as stationary as a traffic cone. Yes, you could see the flashes of skill that got him his reputation, one feint to lose his marker while putting in a cross was lovely stuff, but you can't be a winger if you can barely run and have no energy or urgency. If these Conference defenders can dominate him, I'm afraid he's a million miles away from what we need in Div 1. No surprise he's failed all those other trials, needs to be sent on his way.

But Albert Jarrett, much more promising - the most interesting performer on the night judging how well he wound up the Boro faithful. He's a proper winger, he's got some pace, he's got dribbling skills, he's got a bit a fight in him as he showed with a bit of handbags with a Boro defender. But he didn't do a Molango and demand a contract, the worry, perhaps, is whether there is a composure to go with his skills, his passing and crossing looked awry at key moments. It's a tough call to say if he's really that much better than the wide players we've got, but I think he's earned another chance to demonstrate that, hope he gets one against Southend or Cambridge. He came off on 60mins to the best clap of the night from the Albion faithful present.

The other vaguely important downside of the night has to be Reid's sluggish showing on his comeback - that's a concern, we haven't got long now to get a competitive midfield out against Reading and it's beginning to worry me a bit this. I wonder if we will have to start with one of Harding or Virgo in midfield.

The defence was always going to be a bit disorganised with the two youngsters at fullback and fullbacks El Abd and Mayo at cenntral defence. I thought they did OK, but the defending of corners was poor. It gave Boro a soft goal with a free near-post header and almost another when a similar incident was cleared off the line by Currie.

Positives? I though David Lee played very well in the first-half, our one real creative spark. He started up front in a sort of Sheringham deep-lying role and passed beautifully at times. Combined well with Jarrett to give us our few scoring chances which the Boro goalie dealt with well. Lee faded a bit in the second half but is one of the few players who can be satisfied with his evening's work.

Jake Robinson was anonymous, but the service to him was poor. Of the subs, Beck looked lively when he came on. Roberts not to blame for the goal, both him and Michel had a half each and each made some very good saves, Ben one absolute blinder.

Albion crowd maybe 60-70-ish.

Boroseagull wrote an excellent article on his "dual identity" in the match programme, very insightful and true, I hope he reproduces it on here, deserves a wider audience among Albion fans than the few who turned up tonight.

You didn't mention Nicolas. Is that a deep and meaningful silence?

He was very average, game passed him by, but to be fair, also Reid too.

Nicolas had probably our best chance of the game near the end when a loose back-pass by Boro saw both him and Leon about 35 yards out with no defenders on path to goal. The pass to put Leon through on goal was the percentage option but he went for glory and the ball blazed miles over the bar into us behind the goal. Leon's face a picture of disgust, collective sighs of pained disbelief and comments from behind the goal "that sums this crap game up".

Like you say about the team generally, not a surprise given who was playing.

I think we can safely ignore this result in terms of an indicator of the likely performance of the team in the league. Southend and Cambridge should be clearer.

It's always disappointing to find supposedly quality players like Reid and Currie that are not fit for the beginning of the season. They don't now have much time to establish their credentials. Currie should have been looking to sparkle last night.
