2. He almost certainly has been mistranslated. 'Esperar' in Spanish can translate as 'wait', 'hope' or 'expect'. No other spanish verb translates as expect, except for possibly 'anticipar', which would obviously be translated into 'anticipate'. He is hoping for a top-four finish. Sorry to poop on the story

It's not pooping on the story at all. I have a modern languages degree myself (but not Spanish), which is why that was in there as a genuine option. I can remember some hilarious stories of mistranslation, such as the mayor of berlin sitting next to the Queen in the theatre and, just before the play was about to start, he turned to her and said "Equal goes it loose". The German for "It is about to start" is "Gleich geht es los", which he had translated literally and badly. I can also remember someone translating "school report" in to French as "detonation", which means report in the explosion sense.
