They're already pretty friendly with the US - the country has been full of yank troops since the Korean war.

Precisely. The South Koreans could hardly get any friendlier. And how do you think the South Korean economy has got to where it has? You don't think all those gleaming skyscrapers, modern factories, high-grade shops etc just appeared out of the air (or the Korean economy) do you?
