I know this may be a bit far fetched BUT i feel that if we had iwelumo palying with currie he would had got on the end of some of the crosses. I know that McGhee is lloking for a 'target man' but in the interim we are looking for someone big ,strong, can hold the ball up & be good in the air.

Why dont we plat with Virgo up front ??? im sure he could do all of these things & yes it isnt his position but as a sort term solution could it work ???

It might, unfortunately an important league game isn't really the best place to try an experiment like this. Might be worth giving him a go up front in the reserves though?

Where did you get that idea from?

No idea ...it came to me in a nightmare

No it just occurs to me that we are getting lots of balls into the box but have noone with any heading prowess to get on the end of them.

I'd suggested this on another thread.

i think virgo will do well up front as he has scored a few headed goals and he apparently has a very hard shot on him so would trouble a few keepers with the power he has get him up there as the main man for the crosses that come over from currie and jarrett

It's a nice idea but the downside is he wouldn't be able to retain any possession and I wouldn't have much confidence in his ability to make space around defenders to unleash any shots. Jake is still a better bet if we want to try someone different to Mahe.

Fourteenth Eye, take a bow - great call :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Happy to admit my fears that Virgo wouldn't hold the ball up proved totally groundless. The ball stuck with him well and his lay-offs were good. Fine work in the air.

It allowed us to play the style of football as last season, and lo and behold, a 1-0 win at home so identical to the many we picked up last season.

Outstanding F E.

I have an image now of Mark McGhee slumped at his desk last night after getting home from Gillingham, worrying about the game tomorrow, flicking round NSC to see who's slagging him off, coming across this thread...and a little lightbulb appearing with a "ping" above his head.

A questionable call in foresight, an OUTSTANDING call in hindsight. I think it paid off better than McGhee ever thought it would.

Anyone remember Paul Warhurst ?

Bowing graciously to all.

I musy admit that even though i predicted it when i saw Virgs wander up front at the start of the game i wondered what he was doing. He certainly didnt let anyone down. It will be interesting to see how he does against better defenders today tho
