Soccer - indicates presence of American and/or someone with little to no interest in the game. Originally used by a toff in response to someone inquiring if they going to "rugger", another annoying word.
People who use this word - Americans, Newspaper columnists writing articles on the moral state of football.

Footy - indicates someone who likes to think they're interested in football but actually know slightly less than bugger all on the subject. Normally brought up in conversations at dinner parties, along the lines of "so do you go to the footy?". If you reply that you support Brighton, said person will always reply "I didn't know they had a team!". Twats.
People who use this word - People from Surrey who support Man Utd/Arsenal, students in a pub watching an England game on the big screen.

I've got a horrible feeling I may have said 'footy' at least once before - but more in terms of playing than watching.

For this reason, I have voted for 'soccer'.

We all accept 'Soccer AM' though, do we not?

Oooh, good poll.

But I think it's all about context. Since Britain is the only anglophone country where association football is the main code of football, it's perhaps a bit arrogant to expect people to call the game football. And soccer is pretty specific. I'm happy to call it soccer if I'm overseas but do expect visiting American, Oyrish, Kiwis and YahYahs to call it football when they're living here. Brits calling it soccer can piss off, they're out of touch.

The context argument also goes for "footy". The Aussies call it footy but then it's too much effort for them to speak properly. Nick off with your stupid barbies, unis and footys.

On the other hand, hearing a nouveau "fan" talking about footy is even worse. I blame that tosser and altogether unfunny "comedian", David Baddeil. :tosser:

So footy for me. Just.

Good thread. It's close, both are unacceptable. But since 'soccer' is used by people who don't know any better, and 'footy' is used by people who do know better but choose to ignore it, then 'footy' gets the nod as the most irritating.

'Soccer' is the most irritating. 'Footy' is an admittedly twee contraction of 'football' but at least it gives you a clue that the game is played largely with the FOOT.

soccer was initially used as a shortened version of association football, to differentiate between this and rugby football, at posh colleges. I suppose that is why some yanks pronounce it so-sher. Footy and footer are both very annoying, but soccer is used by rugby fans refering to the beautiful game, when discussing why their game is so more sociable than ours cos you can drink, mix with other fans and there is no violence!! It'll come in their game too, eventually- winning the world cup was just the start. Hey, I'm a football fan, and was kind of converted to at least (almost) understading the game, and will probably watch the six nations. So, to finalise, soccer is the nost annoying- just cos of the context it is usually heard in. Just. :smokin:

'Footy' is the most pathetic term ever associated with our great game, is sounds like something you do to a bird under the dinner table!!
