I have become one of those people that I used to think were very 'sad'! I have become a forager! and now make my own jams and spirits. So far: 8lbs of blackberry jam, 2ltrs of Blackberry vodka, 1ltr of Blackberry brandy, 2ltrs of slow gin and 1ltr of wild damson vodka! There must be equally sad people out there who can suggest further uses for the remaining 8lbs of Blackberries and 4lbs of sloes?

Sloe Gin, with the Sloes. Go scumping for apples and then Blackberry and apple pie, crumble or just Blackberry and apple. Not sad, just good food and drink.

Got some sloes from the clump last Sunday, brought 1.5ltrs of cheap gin ready to knock some up tomorrow.
Sloes have been in the freezer for a few days so i'll let them defrost tonight.

Anything you can make with rosehips; there are loads of those about?

Forget the jammy stuff, what about the "early retirement" bit? My daydreams need a bit of feeding!

Would everyone please stop picking the sloes. It's too early and they won't have developed their tannins.

Early retirement caused by heart attack (mild) but loving life and discovering new hobbies all the time. Got back into fishing this year, plus got back to playing keyboards in my old band and rocking most Saturdays.

Ah, glad some good came out of the bad. I'm at the stage (55) where I'm thinking of all the things I COULD be doing to enjoy myself, and wondering if the sums add up to allow me to escape the boring office life. Moving down your way would be one of the dreams.

The bushes had been decimated by the time I got up there last Sunday. I panicked and grabbed what was left.
