Albion boss Steve Coppell is trying to remain buddies with every football manager and branch of Kentucky Fied Chicken in the country to boost his exhaustive search for more loan signings, as well as Bargain Buckets for NSC sponsored legend Guy Butters.

Coppell borrowed striker Darius Henderson from Reading while his close pal Alan Pardew was still in charge at the Madejski Stadium.

Seven Seagulls have been loaned out at one time or another already this season, but pulling off deals like the ones which brought Steve Sidwell, Graham Barrett, Ivar Ingimarsson and Tony Rougier to Withdean last season is proving difficult.

"We continue to make phone calls on a daily basis," Coppell said. "It's sad really that we have to depend on loan players, but that is a fact of life for us.

"We are keeping tabs on a lot of situations. At the moment Premiership clubs are a little bit wary of doing anything because the transfer window is closed now for them.

"They can't buy any more players, so if they have any injuries it's very much safety first for them.

"The rotation at Chelsea shows a lot of Premiership clubs now need a squad of 20 odd players and they are not going to release players who might be on the fringe."

Swindon demonstrated the benefit of strong contacts on the managerial circuit by snapping up 17-year-old James Milner on loan from Leeds. He starred on his debut against Albion.

"Peter Reid and Andy King are really good friends and Peter loaned Milner to Andy for a month," Coppell said.

"Milner has made a real impact, not only in the game against us but in games since then, so that personal contact can make a big difference.

"It can give you access to players who ordinarily you would have no chance of being able to sign, so it's very much at the moment trying to stay chums with every manager in the League."

The financial implications of the ongoing saga over Albion's plans for a new stadium at Falmer continue to frustrate Coppell in the transfer market.

"This should be a club who should be looking at the market seriously as buyers," he said. "There has been negative investment in the team for probably three or four years now.

"We've been losing players, losing income. There has been nothing put back in the side and that's because of the unique situation and demands of the new stadium.

"I will be delighted when a decision is made on the new stadium, because then we have got a direction.

"Hopefully that direction is positive and we can start investing in the team again, rather than wasting it on lawyers and public inquiries."

Forgive me if I am wrong though BUT before the season ticket renewals we were told by a certain chairman there was a budget for new players. Since then we have sold Zamora, offloaded Kitson and Packham, lost Beasant and Brooker and loaned out half our squad including our second best GK until last week. In return we have re-signed Blackwell and Rodger on reduced wages, brought in Roberts and Knight for free (yes I know there are costs attached but you know what I mean) and are borrowing Henderson from Reading.

Falmer is the ultimate goal and is more important than anything but I would prefer if DK would not give out these soundbites at renewal time (or anytime come to that) about player budget which is constantly contradicted by SC and is evidently not available.

Let's all be honest (and I mean DK here) and say we're broke but financially sound, all the money is going on Falmer, we won't be buying any players but we have a manager with a good record of bringing in good freebies and loanees and that will be the case until we play in front of a larger capacity.

I'd buy that for a dollar

So would I but how many of the anti-Knight brigade would stand for that? As I understand it, there is still money available to bring in another player or 2 but why waste money on donkeys? If the rumours about Owusu are true then there's still a bit left. I think the way we are doing things is fine - if Coppell knows the player well then he signs him permanantly (Roberts/Owusu etc). If not, then he brings them on loan and if they turn out to be cack then back they go.

Where did it ever say Knight was a free transfer ?

The fee was ' undisclosed ', doesn't mean he didn't cost.

Coppell has said there is money for one or two more players, but has also said they have to be players who bring something to the team that we haven't already got, so that doesn't mean we are going all out for Akinbyi and his ilk !

I can't see Owusu or any other forward arriving without Henderson departing, and presumably we wait until Reading want Henderson back before we look as, if the deal fell through, Reading wouldn't look favourably at the possibilty of seeing their loanee being sat on the bench, recall him, and we'd be left with only Knight & McPhee.

We were also told by Steve Coppell at the Fans' Forum that he didn't intend committing his entire playing budget at the beginning of the season.

He knows what he is doing.

From what I have picked up on rumours and comments on here, it appears that SC has a budget that he feels he can work with. I would hazard a guess it is mainly earmarked for wages, with the possibility of a smallish sum, say £100k, for a decent player if one became available/suitable.

I am perfectly happy with our start. We have played 9 games to date (7 of which are from teams currently in the top half), and even though we have not played very well in a few games, are still second.

We have to accept that at the moment, we are not a big club. I don't like it, but it is a fact. Therefore, we should be grateful that we are still competing against the likes of Wednesday.

I am willing to trust DK for the moment. I ignore the pratts who go on about 'Dick Tight' etc. He has been a large part of turing this club around, and for that I am thankful.

If/when Falmer gets the go-ahead, our options will change dramatically. Players will find us a club to be considered if they have ambition (such as Sidwell), as the potential to play in a new modern stadium in a nice part of the country will be in our favour.

For the time being, just trust Coppell. His record since joining last year is very good, even on his very limited resources.

But he's beginning to sound a little more than peed off with the financial situation.................. but then I suppose every manager would like to pay the wages of a creative midfielder rather than a Queen's Counsel
