I live in a country where they still have national service and it's a disaster:

1) The majority of soldiers do the servsice but hardly know one end of a gun to another. And as all the money goes to feeding these 'conscripts' there's not enough money to keep good professionals in the job. Result? A bigger but much weaker army.

2) Takes a minimum of a year's life away from someone right after their education finishes before they start work. Most people have forgotten their studies by the time they start wotking.

3) National Service dumbs people down. I know clever witty funny people who come out of the army as mindless bigots full of nationalst fervour.

4) Similar to 1... a huge waste of money... clothing and feeding all of these useless soldiers when that money could be better used on health and education.

5) Screws up financial forecasting. National Service does not count as unemployment so it makes forecasting unemployment figures much more complex...especially if there is an option for national servicers to extend their stay or pay out to get off early (if they can afford it)... ,it creates a fake view of unemployment and therefore a false view of the economy.

Bad bad bad idea all round.

My brother in law did his national service in the French version of the RAF Regiment back in the 1980's. The only bits that he ever thought worthwhile were learning how to parachute and getting to live in Berlin for a year.

Not Luton! Thank God
I've voted no because the question is about national military service. I'd be interested in seeing proposals about having to 3-6 months of communuty service between your 18 and 21st birthday. Somehow though I think the costs of administering and enforcing it would outweigh the benefits.

Required military service - not a good idea
Required community service, with a wide range of options of what you can do (although no guarantee you'll get exactly what you pick...), including military as an option - might be workable

I've never understood the argument that the army would teach young yobs discipline and respect - go to an army barracks town on a Friday and Saturday night - Colchester, Aldershot, York (Catterick barracks up the road) - and see how respectful and well-behaved a bunch of pissed-up squaddies really are !

Putting young thugs in the army would simply make them feel even more 'macho' and eager for a good ruck.

Like pouring petrol on flames to put out a fire !!!

Stupid thing really.

Soldering is really technical and professional now. The Army do not want to waste time and money on training people wjp don not want to be tgere and would be a liability on the battlefield.

Most National Service seems to be regarded by participants as a waste of their time - spent square bashing doing pointless training and leaning redundant skills that the outside world does not want.

Leave soldiering to soldiers

National service wasn't just for the army. The two other forces had just as many entrants. Dependant on educational qualifications, people got put into different trades so it wasn't just about square bashing and learning to shoot.
