I am 100% behind our manager & think we have signed some good players this pre season.

Given the fact that our biggest problem last season was that we didn't score enough goals shouldn't our main aim this pre season been to increase our scoring potential.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as it stands we have signed

Goalkeeper kuszczak
Defenders bruno,bridge
Midfielders crofts
Attackers NOBODY

plus the fact that Hoskins is out for 6 weeks with a broken foot.

no, always start at the back and work forward...I know you need goals but if you don't let any in you can't lose...a great foundation to build on.

I doubt he intended to work from the back, it's just the way the deals happened. It's hard enough getting people to sign when they have options and you're not necessarily offering the highest wages, to try to pick the order of bringing the in would just make it unnecessarily difficult.

Hoskins injury is recent, it's not like he could factor it in when he started shopping.

You really think he thought "Can't sign ANYONE until I've got a 'keeper"...

The club have likely been working on a striker all summer, its not as easy as it seems.

He did. It worked for a while. We all got a wake up call when we conceded 9 goals in 3 games last season. Prior to that CMS was scoring, after that he was not. It is no coincidence. Gus concentrated more on defending after that.

He has now strengthened the defence and midfield. Once all key players are fit and available (Buckley, Crofts, Lua Lua), I would expect the goals to start flowing again, CMS included.

That was the view and way of working of Brian Clough and George Graham both very successful managers.

He's stated on a number of occasions that this wasn't planned.

They had a number of targets in defence, midfield and attack. The defenders came through first and because of the scarcity of good quality forwards that will accept our pay structure, we are still struggling to land an attacking player.

As i have already said we can expect alot of nil nil draws this season with the occasional 1-1 0-1 and 1-0.Not the kind of football that is going to get the dictator into the premier league with us or with anyone else:albion2:

We shipped some sloppy goals last season so have no problem that we have gone for a more robust defence. I also think the Vicente 'will he/won't he' saga understandably distracted us from other transfer business plus one or two targets seem to have priced themselves out of our budget. The Crofts deal makes a lot of sense as we needed more muscle to prevent us getting outgunned like last season.

Meanwhile the quality of signings and loanees and their wages has also eaten into our transfer budget. I get the impression we are working within a strict budget rather than spray money around in a shit or bust fashion which might be frustrating for us fans but at least helps to keep our finances under control. I am mindful that Tony Bloom is also stumping up for the increased capacity at The Amex and a not inconsiderable sum for the proposed training complex. So if we are obliged to take our time in the transfer market then so be it.

Hmmm......."Don't concede any goals and you will probably win a few games" - we've been there before. George Curtis (it didn't work) and Mike Bailey (it worked quite well but he was sacked because of boring football). I hope that's not the Poyet plan - especially as we still have trouble defending set pieces.
I'm encouraged by the fact that he's looking for a 'different kind of striker' - it looks as if he might be looking at a Plan B. Not hoof-ball, but sometimes pinging a forty yarder into the penalty area can be very effective. Too much of our football, nice though it is, isn't in places that can hurt our opponents

The 3 games I presume you mean we're Leeds,palace & ipswich.

Our biggest problem last season was we couldn't score away from home. The biggest reason we didn't make the playoffs is because of our away form.We had no threat going forward which meant our opponents could take more risks attacking us knowing we didn't have the fire power to hurt them.

Apart from the west ham game we never took a spanking

I agree. The slow build up from the back is classy but teams now know our style, so to suddenly inject a bit of pace makes sense. Look at the CMS goal against Ipswich which took about 5 seconds: Greer to Buckley to CMS, then Goal! We have some serious speedsters in our squad but dont always take advantage so an occasional Plan B, including the diagonal ball out wide to Buckley/KLL/Noone is a good idea.

Starting at the front as suggested by the OP was the way Kevin Keegan worked what did he ever win with his high scoring defeats?

Every season Keegan managed a club for a full season outside the top flight, they were promoted as champions. 100% record.

I think he fully intended to start at the back. It's what he did in his first transfer window with us and saved us from being relegated. Brezovan came in as keeper and Painter & Calderon as LB & RB respectively. We all know what happened the following season.
