Following on from the Da Vinci Code thread. What books have you read which have just turned out to a steaming pile of crap?

Number one on my all time shit list is Prey by Michael Crichton. Some of the writing was junior school level and I was genuinely relieved when it ended.

I'm here all night, let's have 'em!

Catcher in the Rye.

This book's 'hero' made me want to scratch my own eyes out, just so I would have been spared having to read his simpering, sulking, hackneyed moping around. Not totally sure if a shit character makes a shit book, but by the time I finished this all I wanted to do was slap some sense into the little shit. I was left wondering what all the fuss was about quite frankly.

Crime and Punishment.

One of the most ridiculuosly wordy piles of dross ever written. Why use one word when 3 chapters worth of words will do? Long and very, very boring.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres

The book covers the war over many many chapters and then the last 40 years in one chapter with a silly twist which made you wonder why on earth you bothered reading the previous chapters at all.
Some of the chapters are just a monologue by one of the characters which doesn't really add to the story.

I don't believe any non-lobotomised human could read Timequake, by some bloke whose name escapes me ... utter turgid, pretentious nonsense.

Peter Biddlecoombe's United Burger States of America - worst travel book I've ever come across.

The last two Harry Potter books - dire, dire stuff.

Lord Of The Rings (all three of them), and the Hobbit. Drivel, drivel all the way through. (and yes, I read them)

I'm intrigued to know why you read a book, thought it was drivel and then went on to read the next two books in the series?

I started to read LOTR but thought it was utter cack and gave up after a couple of chapters.

In fact, I don't think that I've read truly terrible book because I always give up them up if they haven't gripped me within the opening two or three chapters, there are so many good books to read, why bother with the dross?
