[News] Scottish Labour vote to scrap Trident

Scottish Labour party delegates have backed a vote to scrap the UK's Trident nuclear missile system, which is based at Faslane naval base on the Clyde.

A motion at the party's conference in Perth calling for the UK's nuclear deterrent not to be renewed was supported by an overwhelming majority.
Both party members and unions voted 70% in favour of the motion.
It means Labour now holds different positions on the issue north and south of the border.
However, UK leader Jeremy Corbyn supports not renewing the system.

To be fair, I don't think that every MP in a party should have to have the same opinion on this subject. The only thing I have a problem with is the leader saying he wouldn't use the weapons that his party (were it the government) has decided to pay for. That's mental.

Why? IMO Scotland could have had a society and economy like Norway or Sweden if they'd voted for independence, yet Glasgow has some of the lowest life expectancies in the UK. A SNP led independent Scotland could have been a great nation, I can't believe they wimped out.

I agree MP's can have a range of opinions the problem for Labour is there are different sections of the party who have diametrically opposing views on a major policy issue. Is it really credible for a serious political party to have different parts of the country advocating policies diametrically opposed to each other. Also the Leader to support policies diametrically opposed to current Labour policy, probably a majority of the shadow cabinet views and definitely a majority of the PLP's views.

Well they would be entitled to their fair share of the North Sea oil, and with a population of only 5 million the money would go very far. They could use this money to increase education while developing social projects and their infrastructure to be a more independent nation without relying on the English economy for their economic prosperity. They already have free university level education for their students, and so in 20 - 30 years they could have a highly skilled workforce which can generate a large GDP per capita and use taxes to pay for all the services you'd expect in a fair society.

Have you actually seen the price of Brent Crude at the moment ? It's at about $49 a barrel, the SNP projections which were going to pay for all your wonderful projects and infrastructure were for above $ 100 a barrel, it's typical pie in the sky fairy stories.

Shared history , shared values and economic reasons. Change can be good if it leads to a better outcome. The SNP want to break away from a tried and tested union with Scotlands biggest trading partner (England) but want to stay in the European Union. Their little scotlander nationalism has a strong whiff of anti English sentiment behind it. If the SNP really wants total autonomy making it's own decisions they would be leaving the UK and the EU. An Independent Scotland would be an irrelevance both economically and politically. We are better off together.
