Crystal Palace have pipped Roda JC to the signing of Hungarian striker Sandor Torghelle from MTK Budapest according to the Dutch club.

Roda claim the 22-year-old was keen to join them last Friday, and that he was due to undertake a medical examination.

But, according to a statement from the club on Tuesday morning, the situation has now changed.

"To everyone's stupefaction, we received a phone call yesterday at 7pm from Hungary saying that Sandor Torghelle will not be playing in the colours of Roda JC next season,'' read the statement.

"He appears to have eventually chosen Crystal Palace.''

A powerful targetman, 6ft 2in Torghelle came to prominence when scoring both goals as Hungary beat Germany 2-0 ahead of Euro 2004.
