Was clearly outside the box but clear also VAR didn't have an angle. Presumably they don't get every single camera which seems a bit odd..

In real time I thought it was out, but if you look over the images in this thread then it was probably just in. Just. Or at worst inconclusive. The image we have that looks straight down the line shows why VAR went with the decision it did.

It was OK, more by luck than judgment. But it is another indicator of why Big Bob gives me palpitations and why I breath a little better with Steele in goal.

That's not what the law says. The law says "The goalkeeper has the same restrictions on handling the ball as any other player outside the penalty area." it doesn't specify that where the ball is, is important (for situations like this, it would be quite helpful). It does, however, specify in multiple places, that the location of the goalkeeper is important.

Yes - same restrictions as any other player outside the penalty area: he's not allowed to handle it. You're not allowed to touch the ball with your hands outside the penalty area no matter where the rest of you are. If that was the case it would have been very easy for Rob Sanchez: he could have laid down, keeping his feet and perhaps legs in the area while getting his hands on the ball some 1.5 meters outside the box. But since that is very much not allowed, he tried to wait until the ball got into the box.

Similarly, if the goalie rushes out on a 1on1, gets lobbed and dives backwards to try to save the ball, it doesn't matter if his feet or body is outside the box as long as his hands are inside it.

I stand by that view.

Terrific wit aside, in real time watching on the beeb it looked like it was out/incredibly close to being out. The replays shown on t.v made it look in. The photo from behind play with the ball in the air make it look out but that's a terrible angle and shouldn't be trusted. Mitoma at the world cup should have taught us that much.

At Palace away the obvious VAR rickit changed the game, maybe this is all part of what Ron Atkinson used to say about it all even itself out over the season ‍♂

I was genuinely shocked that he wasn't sent off. I'd be absolutely fuming if I was a Grimsby fan.

Replays show it was on the line - very close but on the line is not outside the box . He did take a chance though .

He 100% picked the ball up outside the box, maybe a smidgen was on the line, it may not have been on the ground when he did so. The replay I saw did not freeze frame though, it was in real time.

In modern VAR influenced football a smidgen is a smidgen, so perfectly fair decision for me. Lots of goals these days disallowed due players being a smidgen offside. At the end of the day if we did get away with one I think we were due one.

I dont get this. How are people looking at this image and seeing it all outside the box? That is the var image that was shown. We didnt get away with one, it was the correct decision, although it was close.

Exactly. Just like when players position the ball for corners … the ball only has to ‘overhang’ the line to be ‘inside’.

To be fair, the East linesman raised his flag immediately, not waiting for VAR. That only confirmed the original decision.

This is the Mitoma incident at the World Cup where he pulled the ball back - originally ruled out - but goal given by var. There was loads of analysis after as it was so important. Some angles gave false impression ball was way over the line … but it was proved that the ball overhung the line and goal was correctly awarded.
