Blimey - they really are desperate aren't they. As if having that fool Rupert Lowe back in charge wasn't bad enough.

I hereby predict Southampton to be relegated before the daffodils have wilted.

The only thing I can think of would be that they might save on the costs of stewarding, opening catering outlets and cleaning for those areas...other than that probably not much.

It does sound a bit like a club in trouble and taking desperate measures to cut corners, pardon the pun, in an effort to stay afloat.

Southampton are to close parts of their St Mary's Stadium next season as part of the club's cost-cutting measures.

Three of the four corners of the stadium will be closed, affecting around 700 season ticket holders.

The club believes the changes, in tandem with cuts to subsidised bus travel and match-day staffing, will save up to £250,000.

"We deeply regret having to take these measures," football club chairman Michael Wilde told the club website.

"But unfortunately they have been forced upon us by the financial situation we find ourselves in.

"We now have to make some unpleasant and unpalatable decisions to get the finances back on track."

The areas will be reopened for games where huge crowds are expected.

Meanwhile, the club have yet to announce which out-of-contract players they intend to keep next season.

There could be changes as new head coach Dutchman Jan Poortvliet runs the rule over the current squad.

Among those waiting to hear their future are Nathan Dyer, Inigo Idiakez, Darren Powell and Jermaine Wright, who will be free agents.

I quite liked the Dell.

You have to wonder what has happened to all the money made on the transfers.

Baird £3m
K Jones £6m
Bale £5m
Crouch £7m
Walcott £12m?
Beattie £6m
Bridge £7m

That is about £46m in transfer fees over the past few years and only the ones off the top of my head.

The Echo [local paper] did a big thing on this a year or so ago, and incredibly they showed that the transfers in and out were basically balanced over the last few years. It was something like £39m in and £37.5m out over the period in question.

They just bought VERY badly.

Even bigger shame they didn't get relegated as it seems they are going to be shite this season. Would have been nice to be able to take the piss at the games against them. Big time Charlies fallen flat on their faces.

Will save money on stewards, catering outlets, turnstile staff and cleaning. It will also help by getting fans all in one place, thus maximising the sound. Even so a drastic measure from a club in trouble.
