RIO DRUG DOUBTS
Monday 6th October 2003

Rio Ferdinand could be forced out of England's crunch Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey - after being reported for missing a mandatory drugs test.
The Manchester United defender reportedly claims that he forgot to attend the test, but realized his mistake and passed another test 48 hours later.

England caused some raised eyebrows when they delayed naming their squad for 24 hours on Monday - the second such postponement in two days.

The explanation was that they were waiting to see which players were available - and it appears that Ferdinand could have been one of those causing the delay.

Ferdinand is due to attend an FA hearing where any further action will be decided by the governing body.

Both the FA and the player's club Manchester United have refused to comment on the events - but it provides an enormous moral dilemma ahead of the Turkey game.

With drugs allegation always treated with enormous care by the FA, they may have to make an enormous decision on whether to allow the defender to be included in the England squad for the vital game in Istanbul.
