W Hta ever people may think of thid Goverment but this scheme is a classic.

Just bought a cannondale street 3 ultra city bike worth £599 that will cost me £300 (the bike was old stock originally going for over £1000.

Plus a top lock, top winter gloves bike computer, base shirt (also ueful for walking etc) and bike storage bracket that will cost me £100 instead of £200.

I also have 13 months to pay it off and

Basically loads of top gear at half price, knowing all the taxes have been taken off!

It's a brilliant idea. At work we have tried to get our company to adopt it but they say there is so much admin involved they wont consider it.

I have got a £45 second hand bike that I bought in Brighton as there were far too many bikes being nicked or damaged to buy a decent one. It has come up to London with me and I am really enjoying my cycles along the Thames.

I think I might invest in a better one. I worked out that over a period of 6 months, I have saved myself something like £300 on travel. Cycling is apparently going to be huge with a new breed of cyclist appearing due to the 'credit crunch'.

Just been reading about this scheme and it looks great. I don't think I will benefit as I am self-employed, but good nonetheless.

Didn't Brighton win a large grant to become a 'cycling city'? Still a major issue when it comes to secure storage, considering how many flats there are in the city.

Doing the scheme myself, I managed to get a £450 Gary Fisher mountain bike for around £250.

I would never leave it locked up outside, I keep it in my flat and we have an enclosed courtyard at work. I've had 2 experiences of people nicking bikes off me, one of which was worth over £300.

My bike stays in the house now, especially after I had my shed broken into (all that was in it at the time was the bike and the mower, whoever broke in didn't fancy either, mind you the bike was a bit knackered at the time). Since the credit crunch started to bite it has come out of retirement and is now used to shoot around town on, I would be destraught if someone knicked it, despite it being over 10 years old and somewhat tatty.

You took your time, about that, been waiting for that post!.

There's deffo a huge upturn in cycling, whether it be money, or the olympic success, plenty of ill advised lycra out on Sunday mornings. (me included)

What is really noticeable since the start of the new university term this year is that the number of cyclists using the Lewes Road cycle lanes has grown enormously.

When I used to cycle to Sussex University years and years ago, only a handful of other people did so.

They're also packing the trains.

The 8.41 from London Road to Seaford was cancelled this morning, which meant the next train - the 8.48 - was packed. Added to the fact there was a build-up of people on the London Road platform, the vast majority of whom would have been getting off at Falmer, it meant I could have indulged in a game of Sardines with 200 or so 20 year-old studentchicks if I'd wanted to get on that train.

I didn't though. I let them off that one... :(

Thanks for your help. This time, I really looked at all the styles of bikes, including dutchy types. In the end, to get "half price" I was restricted to Evans, this bike, has obvioulsy ben designed at the Euro city market.

It runs well and of course everything included back brake, fitted lights included.

Ultimately getting any high spec Cannondale brand new for 300 is good news.

Back to Barrel of Fun, have you set up a limited Company? If so, your Company can buy the bike on your behalf etc your accountant should be able to write all the taxes off. Various sites including Evans advise businesses, whatyou need to do.

I've just looked your new steed up. (I can't help it, looking at new bikes is a weakness)
£300, that's a reet bargain, you got there.
Looks to be more comfort over speed, cos it looks tres comfy.

I'd be interested in the job Evans have done.
If in 6 months time your still happy with the build, I might stop slating Evans to everyone.

How soon is now?
A guy at work here did the scheme thing, got a great bike with all the trimmings - well worth it. I on the other hand bought my bike of a lad who posts on here for 50 quid, and its been great considering it was locked outside my flat for the whole of last winter. Still use it most days to get to work, its knocked my petrol bill right down

I am envious. I used to cycle up to Hammersmith to go rowing. Happy days.

Sounds like happy days indeed. Looks great fun and normally have a gander on Sundays.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a syndicate together to buy a double skull, but no idea what costs are involved yet. Certainly seems like a good idea at the outset.

I think my old man would be pleased to see me take up rowing as he rowed for his Cambridge college and coached the ladies blues.

Lets see.

Bearing my age late 40's, I went for more comfort and a bike generally with componants built to last. Yep there are better quality. lighter gearing systems etc and stronger steeds, but it seems to have a good balance. I have also given my present cannonadale hybrid a bit of an overhaul, I still have a damaged back axel and cone, but it now works a lot better.

So I have a good balance.

glad it's still going strong. I got rid of it because I got myself a cycle to work one. Brilliant scheme.
