Receiving payments via PayPal...

I have found a buyer for something I was selling recently via the website Gumtree, he is offering to pay via PayPal, can there be anything dodgy in this?

Obviously I want until payment has come through before I send the goods but I don't have a PayPal account and don't really know how it all works.

Nothing too dodgy, except that you have to pay Paypal for the transaction if, I think its under £50. Look into this bit and charge the guy/girl your Paypal fees, unless you can absorb it into the cost of whatever you're selling

Paypal is fine been using it for e bay auctions for years, it actually one of e bays companies.
rather than open up a paypal account that you will probably won't used again have you not got a trusted friend or relative that has a paypal account , it would simplify things.
