Read Any Good Books ?

One of the best books I've read in recent years was a footie book (what else??!) called ' The Miracle Of Castel Di Sangro' about a minor Italian Serie C club looking to get promoted.

Written by an American Journalist, he followed the team for a year and had almost 'access all areas' leeway. Totally absorbing and, I think, it's where Cudicini started his career.

How about y'all?

???

I've read most of Tony Adams' autobiography. Although for a thoroughly entertaining read abour a really weird guy read 'Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?' by Tom Baker.

Lord of the Rings managed to occupy several months of otherwise boring evenings while I was on secondment prior to my redundancy.

By the way, you can get it in paperback for about £4.50 at Sussex Stationers and the writer is Joe McGuiness, I seem to recall.

It's Joe McGinnis. And it is a really good book.

BTW, Tim, Nicci French is a they - it's a husband and wife team of Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. I've not read them, but heard they're good.

Just finished reading Michael Crick's biog of Fergie. He might be a great manager, but he comes across as an utter bastard. Good read though. I'm reading his biog of Archer now (that's Jeffrey not Bill)

I've gone on something of a culture kick and started reading books from the Big Read Top 100. I was sick of not being able to answer literature questions in quizzes. The following are good IMHO :-

Catcher in The Rye
1984
Animal Farm
Of Mice and Men
Great Expectations
David Copperfield

I've just started reading most of the Ben Bova books. I don't really like any of them apart from Mars and Return to Mars but I keep going anyway.

Extra Virgin by Annie Hawes is good as well. About a woamn who moves to Ligura in Italy.

Coach 03 have you read Tim Parks book about a season following Hellas Verona, thats pretty good.

As for fiction I would highly recommend Chuck Palahniuk. He wrote fight club, but even better are Survivor and Lullaby.

Also read and enjoyed Life of Pi the booker prize winner.

Castel di Sagro & Season with Verona are both brilliant. I went on a football book buying spree a while ago and they were the best two by far. If you only read one more book though, read 'Seabiscuit' is quite simply stunning & the film is out soon as well. Currently reading the book (forget it's title) about the friendshsip between Jesse Owens and Jou Louis - am about halfway through & is fantastic.

Reading Sophie's World at the moment by Jostein Gaarder, it's about the history of philosophy. The book had sat on the shelf for a couple of years and I had never got round to reading it so I took it on holiday with me as that is about the only time I can ever manage to read something with a serious or intellectual content.

So far I am about two thirds of the way through and have to say it's a pretty good read.

I've read that. I did a lot of philosophy back in my uni days & read it 6 months after doing my degree. It was good, but I found it quite hard work to get through. Saying that, having read Jean-Jacques Rousseau, & Machivelli anything else should be quite easy!

BrightonBird, haven't finished Tony Adams' book yet, but it does give quite an interesting insight into the mind of an alcoholic.

I'd also recommend anything by Ian Banks or John Wyndham, and High Rise by J G Ballard was excellent.

Good book. A lot of 'intellectuals' were sniffy about it but I thought it was an excellent introduction to philosophy. My degree's in philosophy and I'd wished it had been written before I'd started my course.
