Trying to think of another celebrity who has changed more (both in themselves and public perception thereof) over 40-50 years than Lydon.

Morrissey?

Yeah, two previous 'outsiders' or anti-Establishment figures who were often brilliantly witty and entertaining, but who have become increasingly obnoxious and offensive, and will say anything to court controversy and remind us of their existence: Lydon endorsing Donald Trump as some kind of champion of the American working-class, and Morrissey now a supporter of Far Right groups like Britain First, and who has confessed his admiration for Nigel Farage.

I still love Morrissey's and PIL's music, but as people, I now find Morrissey and Lydon utterly repugnant and boorish, and bloated with an exaggerated sense of their own importance.

What a load of old tosh. Lydon should f*** off back to the butter mines, where he belongs.

I kinda feel like both of them don't really have an actual position that they consistently stand by, they are just anti whatever the current cultural zeitgeist is. I feel like the Lydon and Morrissey of the late 70's / early 80's would 100% be against their modern day incarnations. They were Antifa before it was cool. And now that it's cool they've become fascists (a little hyperbolic, I admit) instead.

They exist just to be contrarians.

Yeah I get what you're saying. Whatever the majority agree with, they naturally feel uneasy with. But 70s Lydon would HATE 2023 Lydon with a flaming passion.
