Gus was odds on to be the next Reading boss
Gus Poyet is handing Albion a massive boost – by confirming he will stay at The Amex.
The Albion will end two days of suspense by cutting short speculation that he would take the vacant Reading job.
Reading were reported to have offered Poyet a short cut to the Premier League and the promise of a large transfer budget this summer in the likely event of them being relegated.
But, as first revealed last night at theargus.co.uk, Poyet will stay to mastermind Albion’s challenge for promotion.
He is now turning his attention to eight Championship matches which could take the Seagulls into the second tier play-offs for the first time since 1991.
Fears grew Poyet’s three-and-a-half year tenure as Seagulls boss could be coming to an end as he remained odds-on favourite to take over at Reading.
Neither Albion nor Reading would comment on reports that Poyet had been offered the job of saving the Berkshire club from Premier League relegation.
The Seagulls’ chief executive Paul Barber was unavailable for comment.
Albion directors discussed the state of play at a Board meeting yesterday before moving on to celebrate the career of a manager Poyet will now try to emulate by taking the club into the top flight – Alan Mullery.
Poyet was chairman Tony Bloom’s first managerial appointment and has been given unprecedented backing in the transfer market, making three seven-figure signings in Craig Mackail-Smith, Leo Ulloa and Will Buckley.
He has also pulled off several impressive free agent signings for the Seagulls including Liam Bridcutt – who hopes to make his international debut tonight – Tomasz Kuszczak, Bruno and David.
Many supporters kept faith that Poyet would stay out.
Almost 800 readers voted in a poll at theargus.co.uk which asked what they thought Poyet’s next move would be and 74% said they expected him to stay.
