I have been particularly heartened by the level of support shown to me by the chairman and large sections of Southampton Football Club - including many players and supporters.
However, whilst it is clear that there has been a great deal of support for me on the board, it has not been 100 per cent. Therefore I have reluctantly decided to withdraw my name from consideration for the post.
My position would have been untenable without the full support of the club's directors. That situation would also have been very damaging to Southampton - which is something, above all else, I want to avoid. This has been a very difficult decision for me and my family as I have great respect for the club.
I am now taking forward discussions with Brighton and Hove Albion chairman Dick Knight about an imminent move to take over the managerial reins at his club and help put right the damage done by a succession of poor managers over the past few years. After all, where is Peter Taylor now – 3rd division – Micky Adams is headed for relegation, I was always a better player than Steve Coppell (and a better manager) and no one can understand a word Mark McGhee says – just ask Leon Knight … so B&HA here I come.
