PayPal transaction SAGA - Should I be suspicious?

I posted on here a couple of days ago asking if anyone knew of anything dodgy in regards to accepting PayPal payments and then sending goods out.

The guy I'm dealing with keeps stalling on payment, but also keeps saying "please send goods immediately as soon as I've paid you", "please send goods as soon as possible" etc but when pressed for his shipping address he first said Essex, then he went quiet for a couple of days, now he's said he's moved to Coventry, but he didn't even spell Coventry right (conventry).

Do I trust him? Or is he someone for whom English isn't his first language and I'm being overly suspicious? Sometimes when English isn't someone's first language they can come across as very blunt without meaning to be.

Thoughts? I really want to sell it but what could go wrong? He gets the items then complains to PayPal they're not in the condition I stated? (They are, obviously).

ask for cheque or bank transfer.

I think Bank Transfer might be the best option out of all of these.

Completely secure, and there's no way he can scam me once he's sent the money, with PayPal he can complain to them and mess me around. With my bank, they're not going to care what the money was for etc.

I'll send him an email asking for a Bank Transfer and either he'll get on with it or it'll scare him off.

Sounds a little dodgy, most just pay with paypal and wait for it to turn up without hassling the seller, how much money are talking about here ?
was it something sold on Ebay ? can you give us a little background ?
My thinking is if he is only in Essex and its proper money (few hundred etc) he should come and collect it.
As above ask for alternative payment.

As I mentioned he was originally asking it to be sent to Essex, now he's saying he's moved to Coventry.

It's just under £200.

If he's genuine there's no reason he can't go to a Bank and transfer the money through, it'll come through immediately and there's no way he can scam me with saying the goods arrived faulty etc.

I sold it on a website called gumtree. It's a Friday-Ad/eBay type website, you advertise to your local area (Brighton in my case, which makes it even more odd that he found me) for free.

Although the website is focussed on Brighton anyone in the world can still stumble across it with the help of Google and Yahoo.

I have only ever used Paypal once and that was two years ago last month some bastard used my password (which I had forgotten by the way) and helped themselves to £270 fortunately my bank (Co-operative) and Paypal jumped on it straight away....but it still took 3 weeks to get the money back into our account,Paypal pointed the accusing finger at Lycos who now have given up on the email business and hosting websites who I used for both.
Paypal
Ebay
Lycos
Hotmail
Gumtree

all very flaky and I won't open mail from any of them

His problem is (if he is genuine) that if he pays you by bank transfer you could simply deny that you received the money, or could claim you sent the item, or it could be not as described etc etc. Of course you're kosher but he doesn't know that - which is why these things are weighted in favour of the buyer.

Escrow would be the best way to go about it perhaps? He pays the money over to the escrow company - so you know the money actually exists, and when he gets the items he agrees it's ok and they release the funds to you.

But dodgy people will beat every system won't they.

Simple answer is, if he stalling and mucking about with payment, report to ebay and mail him to feck off and you have reported.
Most genuine bidders will just pay through what ever means you require, and wait for the post.

Mello, was it on Ebay, or similar? Did you have a large number of bids? (i.e. there was quite a bit of interest in the item). If so, I'd just say to the chap, something lke, "I've been more than patient, please provide payment within the next 48 hours, or I'm relisting the item.". There's no need for you to be a do gooder about it. If he wants it, he bid on it, he should pay for it, else, someone else will be the lucky winner.

Edit: Sorry - just seen your message above about Gum Tree. Situation still exists if you've had other interest.

Trust is in such short supply these days.

I advertised my car for sale on Exchange and Mart online.

Man called, came to see it, started off making an offer well below asking price, but we eventually haggled up to an agreed price. He wanted to pay cash £2k so I said I'd like to go with him to my bank and pay it in over the counter as I didn't know him or what a good fake £50 or £20 looked like. He took exception to this, said I had insulted him. I tried to explain that I was only being cautious but he walked away from the deal .....

Was I being insulting asking to do this?

Does it make a difference if I told you he was a Jamacan?

Not at all. If you are a buyer you have to present yourself as being trustworthy, as the seller has to place an element of trust in you.

He clearly couldn't be trusted. Deal ends there.

UPDATE:

Seems by asking for a Bank Transfer I've scared him off. He has not emailed me at all today, compared to when we were discussing payment previously he was emailing me constantly.

Will update if I do hear back from him, but as it is am feeling happy that I'm fairly sure I caught a scammer out.
