We absolutely should be looking to make strategic investments in industries like steel in order to keep them in the UK. Longer term and beyond any one, two, three, four etc Governmental terms should be the priority and we really ought to have been making these investments a decade or two ago. Whatever the short term cost, the country will be much better off in the longer term.

For clarity, I am not pro-coal as a major energy source (nasty smelly stuff), but I am pragmatic enough to recognise that it will continue to have some uses where it cannot be replaced, and I think it is environmentally and economically the responsible thing to use our own resources rather than importing it.

They will channel a huge amount into the plant to update the blast furnaces then sell it off cheap to there buddies in the City, who will run it into the ground taking huge bungs, dividends and bonuses and then plead with the government for subsidies and bailouts, because that hasn't happened before (Thames water, Eastern Railway etc)

It's not remotely cynical to suggest that public utilities and nationalised industries have been sold off on the cheap. That's what happened during the 'economic miracle' of the 80s and 90s. Sometimes you have to find out the hard way -- about the only one that has worked is BT.
