I can't imagine Pardew has much, if anything, to do with negotiations - just as Gus would not have a pivotal role in arranging the sale price of our fringe players.

This. Just to remind people that this is the 21st century, not the 1970s. In the old days, managers probably did all the negotiations with their opposite number, but then the financial side of transfers was taken out of the hands of those people that had bugger all to do with the finances of a club. Mullery was a victim of this when he threw his toys out of the pram over lawrenson. I doubt there is any manager in the top two flights, possibly even including leagues 1 and 2 that carries out negotiations over all the financial details.
