Parallels between Wardy’s time and now

When Brighton went up in ’79 I was 13 and celebrated by riding my Grifter (hands-free no less) down elm drive to celebrate – screaming at the top of my voice. This memory was happily filed away and almost forgotten until I picked up and read Matt Horner’s excellent homage to the goldstone legend, Peter Ward.

Having now finished Wardy’s book I can’t help but feel that history is about to repeat itself over the coming few years. The parallels are there between our surge over the late 70’s and our time here and now.

Stick with me here... and no I haven’t been on the sauce.

When Mullary took charge we were no more than we are now – an average 3rd (in old money) division side. Mullary was in his thirties and untried as a manager. Remind you of anyone?

What set us off in the 70’s was the statement of intent issued by our wealthy & ambitious chairman, Mike Bamber - when he said that Mullary would be the manager to take us up the leagues.

Fast forward to today and once again our head-honcho has the money and vision of his 70’s counterpart and like Bamber has blood that were it to transfused, would come out blue and white.

Exciting times ahead.

Now where did I put my medication?

Except that when Mullery took over we'd finished just outside the promotion slot, whereas Poyet took over in the middle of a relegation struggle - after a season of another relegation struggle.

I don't think there was such a gap between the top and bottom divisions in those days. I believe Swansea went from the 4th to 1st in successive seasons (and briefly topped the 1st Division). The gap between the top of the Prem and the rest of the Prem is huge, the gap between the rest of the Prem and the yo-yo clubs is big and the gap between the yo-yo clubs and the rest of the Championship is quite a hefty one.

It's a nice idea but not even in my wildest dreams do I see us in the Prem in three seasons.

Did anyone else tuck the front mud guard under the Grifter's front tyre so it sounded like a motobike when you rode it?

You lucky bastards... I used to dream of having a grifter :nono:

I had to put cow horns on my old sit-up-and-beg with 3 sturmey archers :nono:

then one day I spray painted it gold.

It was a thing of beauty :)
