I'm confused. Everyone always went on about a NUMBER of quality players at Stockport a year or so ago (including Baker, Fon Williams, Rose, McNulty, Dicker, Tunnicliffe amongst others).

But why - if they had so many quality players - were they a pretty rubbish team in League One?

Well, we signed most of them so it was possibly a case of talking up their team prior to them joining us.

Our Stockport recruitment drive didn't really work though did it? (Dicker excluded of course)

Just proves what a good manager Jim Gannon is, or what a good job he was doing there. The players individually might not be setting the world alight, but together they were a pretty decent side.

Fon Williams is a very good goalkeeper, Bury have pulled off a coup there.

I think you'll find they were doing very well until the wheels came off with the financial situation. Even then they survived a 10 point deduction and played the last third of the season with a weakened team. If they were shit they would have been relegated that year.

Indeed, they were pushing play-offs half way through 08/09 season IIRC. Think they sold off Anthony Pilkington to Hudders (arguably one of the best players in L1) in Jan, McNulty to us (among others) which, coinciding with the financial meltdown of the club, meant things went downhill pretty rapidly. A whole host of top quality players left summer 09, including Dicker, Oli Johnson, Tommy Rowe, Michael Raynes, Josh Thompson and they were then left with the bare bones under Ablett in 09/10.

But yes, they did produce some superb talent under Gannon.

fon Williams was (and I would suggest still is) a very promising young keeper who completely lost confidence playing behind an awful defence on one of the worst pitches in the league. He still hasn't got it back but maybe a loan deal is what he needs to pick himself up again - that and a mentor to talk him through things

Always thought he was pretty good.
For his sake hope this move to Bury will help him get his mojo back. Would've loved him this time last year but wouldn't get a look in now
