To test my theory that you can get an answer to anything on NSC, can anyone solve the last clue in last Sat's Guardian crossword - it's driving me mad.

"Scottish trees are a pain in the Bahamas"
Five letters: -I - K -

I thought it must begin with S for Scottish but couldn't any tree beginning with I and nor can I think of anything Scottish beginning with B for Bahamas.

I'm baffled but this will really test the power of NSC.

As it's the last clue, can't you just put any letters in!!

I could but I want to send it off for the prize, so I can go another week of not winning it.

I think it's probably 'birks' which apparently are trees (Scottish?). BS would be Bahamas with 'irk' inside meaning pain.

Do I get a share of the prize if you win, say 10%? If it's a book I'll take the ending chapters though!

You're brilliant. The dictionary has birks meaning birches in Scottish dialect. No wonder I couldn't get it.

The prize is a dictionary so you can have the letter Z :) Or, if you're in the pub before the Reading game I'll buy you a pint.

DKM, I've finished the Observer - any particular clues you want to know?

No worries. Any other clues, just ask,

Doh - where did the lake come into it.

Cheers Gwylan. Good lad.

The L is crossword shorthand for lake. Keep up!
