We drew 0-0 with Doncaster Rovers...................... at Priestfield.......................... when scond from bottom of the league.

It was undoubtedly the best match in terms of sheer inability I have ever seen.

and was one of the BEST days I have ever spent at a football ground.

but what a long way we've come in those

That was the 1st appearance of the enourmous scarf made of all 92 clubs scarves tied together I think.

I think McGhee would have called that performance "inept" it was a shocker. Do you remember whether Kerry Mayo played in that game?

I remember having a ticket for a normal seat for that game, but feeling naughty cos I went and sat in a "gold" one (their were loads of empty ones).

The thrill of my defiance was far more exhilerating than the match.

I went dressed in a load of St Pauli gear, masquerading as a foreign football fan who had travelled over to support two teams in need. People were shaking my hand, thanking me for coming, didn't have the heart to tell them I was from Uckfield and had been to nearly every game at the Pissfield that season. I actually met some real St Pauli fans in the beer garden of the Cricketers before the game, so there were some geunine foreign types there that day. Can remember that Chelsea fan who had been at the Hartlepool game getting slung out by the stewards after about 10 minutes.

Easy, were those GOLD seats in that new (at that time) stand? The padded ones right at the front of the stand by the halfway line? I sat in those for the whole 98/99 season even though my season ticket was for a normal seat. How about that for thrills?

Those were indeed the ones.
My buttocks still pine for the squashy foamyness of those resplendent golden bum-cradles. I thought I was being such a REBEL as well, so to learn that you spent the entire season hijacking a gold seat you hadn't paid for has somewhat diluted my feeling of bravado.

I spent the whole match on edge, convinced I would be challenged any minute by a steward or a "golden ticketholder". When I got away with it and left the game unmolested, it felt as though I was walking on air.

Those seats really were the place to be. Took me a couple of games to get the brass nerve needed to sit in GOLD seats but I never looked back after that. Once even saw that Geoff bloke who did the Meridian sport. The bloke who does South Today now. We even had some banter with him. Celebrities AND padded seats, it was like Chelsea in the early 70's at times.

I remember it well...I took my girlfriend along as a Valentines treat. She actually seemed quite up for it. It didn't occur to me that she was unaware that the Albion were playing in Gillingham. How her little face dropped when we pulled off the M25 towards Chatham docs - she had evidently been looking forward to some hand holding in the Lanes after the match.
Still, she got her own back eventually. We've been married for a year and the bitch is bleeding me dry.

That was my FIRST ever game.

Don't remember anything about though apart from it being a bit boring
That's pretty much my lasting memory of all the games at Gillingham.

Know what you mean Prof without wishing the worst dont ever get divorced cos you will find out the true meaning of being bled dry.

Until that game, I had "loyally" boycotted matches at the Priestfield - although I can't for the life of me think how that "loyalty" was helping anyone, let alone the Albion.

Not understanding the geography of the place, I found myself standing at the wrong end of the ground - opposite the Rainham end - which had been opened for what, I guess, must have been the ONLY time during our stay there.

Great banter with the Donny fans, though, with a particular emphasis on the bonfire building exploits of Mr Richardson. Fashion item du jour was, of course, the fireman's helmet.

I just remember being completely embarrassed having taken friends who supported other clubs along ........... the best bit was The Cricketers beforehand, and after that - it was atrocious. But we got the point to ensure Rovers were well out of reach below us.

I was selling Goldstone Gamble tickets that day in the Gordon Road Stand (can't remember if they were being called Goldstone Gamble, Withdean Wager or whatever) and when I went to sit in my REGULAR GOLD seat only to find that SOMEONE who WASN'T ME was sitting in MY seat.

I was FORCED to sit in one of the LESSER unpadded seats. I was EXTREMELY put out.

That is all.
