Albion*striker Chris O’Grady is wanted back by Sheffield United, for the rest of the season or permanently.
O’Grady was recalled from his January-ending loan spell in Yorkshire by Seagulls caretaker Nathan Jones for Monday’s 2-0 win at Fulham.
He made a late appearance as a substitute, with Darren Bent ruled out of the final game of his loan from Aston Villa by a groin strain.
League One United were well on the way to reaching an agreement to retain O’Grady until May when circumstances changed with Sami Hyypia’s resignation as Albion manager and Bent’s injury.
The Blades are also understood to be keen on making O’Grady’s move to Bramall Lane permanent.
The Albion future of O’Grady, out-of-favour under Hyypia after arriving from Barnsley in the summer for £500,000 on a three-year contract, will now hinge on the opinion of new boss Chris Hughton.
Bent, meanwhile, has probably kicked his last ball for Albion.
Their hopes of re-engaging the 30-year-old ex-England goalscorer could be dashed by Championship promotion contenders Derby County, who want Bent on loan for the rest of the season.
Albion remain out of the relegation zone after Wigan lost 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday last night.
