Albion Women began their Premier League Cup campaign with a thrilling victory over Chesham in an incredible 90 minutes at Worthing.
Kate Natkiel and Holly Talbut-Smith both scored on their competitive debuts for the club; whilst a hat-trick for Vicky Gallagher and a strike from former Seagull, Gemma Fraser almost salvaged a point for the Generals.
Albion got off to the perfect start with just 32 seconds on the clock, when Natkiel rifled home from close range after some good work by Kim Whitcombe on the left-hand side.
But Chesham hit back through Gallagher in the ninth minute, after she cut inside the box and looped her shot over keeper Charlotte Sole.
The Seagulls regained the lead ten minutes later, as Barton launched an unstoppable drive from 35 yards that looped over keeper Sian Williams.
A third goal then came thanks to Charlotte Owen, who latched onto Natkiel’s cross and swept the ball past Williams with nine minutes remaining of the first-half.
The Buckinghamshire side were then given a lifeline just past the hour mark, when Sole was penalised for a late challenge on Natalie Adams inside the area. Gallagher scored the resulting penalty to bring the away side back into the game.
Albion substitute Talbut-Smith then restored the two-goal cushion,as some great persistence saw her through one-on-one with Williams; the teenager coolly slotting the ball home with 15 minutes left.
But more drama ensued when Fraser came back to haunt her former club with a long-range strike in the 82nd minute to make it 4-3. Gallagher then completed her hat-trick with another effort from distance just three minutes later, meaning the plucky Generals looked like leaving Worthing with an unlikely point.
But fortune favoured Albion in the end, as Barton’s deep corner into the box appeared to strike the hand of defender Chloe Gunn before rolling into the net, and the Seagulls claimed all three points.
Albion: Sole (GK); Boswell, Carter, Beaumont (Mangan 90+5), Poole; Natkiel, Barton (Rowe 89), Young, Owen, Whitcombe (Talbut-Smith 67), Waine.
