Albion women’s defence of the Sussex Challenge Cup came to an end at the hands of Chichester.
A brace from Abbey Shrubb and a strike from former Seagull Hollie Wride ended Albion's hopes of retaining the trophy for a third consecutive season.
The misty conditions made it difficult for both sides, but the Green Army got off to the perfect start inside two minutes when Wride’s set-piece beat keeper Charlotte Sole.
The only real chance for John Donoghue’s side in the first half was Kirsty Barton’s long-range shot that went just wide of the target.
Chichester pressed forward and could have doubled their advantage through Georgina Starkey, but her dangerous free-kick was collected by Sole.
Jenna Fowlie then broke forward against the run of play, only for her cross to elude the Chichester attack.Sole was called into action once again moments later as Shrubb raced through on goal, but the Albion shot-stopper made a crucial challenge to keep the score at 1-0.
The Seagulls gradually improved as the half went on; Rebecca Thompson-Agbro saw her shot blocked before Amy Green’s speculative effort clipped the top of the crossbar.
Albion showed real attacking intent at the start of the second half with Donoghue choosing to go with just three defenders at the back, and Thompson-Agbro went close once again from Tammy Waine’s corner.
Barton also went close with a shot from distance, but the Chichester defence did well to block the midfielder’s effort.
Lucy Somes then went close with a low driven effort that went just past the far post.
But it was Chichester who struck again thanks to Abbey Shrubb’s emphatic effort, as she unleashed a rasping strike past Sole to put the Green Army on the brink of a real cup upset.
Albion pressed forward against a resolute Chichester defence, but were reduced to largely long-range efforts from Somes and Mollie Kmita.
Chichester killed the game off in the final minute of normal time, when Shrubb was played through one-on-one with Sole and produced a cool finish to ensure the South East Combination side lifted the trophy.
ALBION: Sole (GK); Carter [Potkins 59], Beaumont, Thompson-Agbro, Poole; Boswell, Green [Mollie Kmita 79], Barton, Rosie Kmita [Howells 45]; Somes, Waine.
Subs not used: Mangan (GK); Capon.*
