Simon Rusk’s reign as Brighton & Hove Albion under-21s coach began with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United after a brace from Danny Pappoe and a Robin Deen strike sealed all three points.
Albion got the game off to a flyer when Pappoe rose above a sea of Newcastle defenders to thump his effort past Freddie Woodman’s reach from a Jesse Starkey free-kick after just 11 minutes.
Newcastle’s Jamie Sterry provided Christian Walton with his first test of the game after 21 minutes, when Adam Armstrong passed into space for the full-back to fire a close-range effort which was tipped away by the young keeper.
Newcastle continued to pile on the pressure when Armstong rifled a shot from distance which Walton saved, followed by Alex Gillead on the rebound who fired high and wide into the North Stand.
Starkey provided a key assist from another free-kick from the right flank in the 29th minute when Pappoe pounced up to greet the ball and headed his effort into the top-left corner of the goal, leaving Freddie Woodman stranded on his line.
It looked likely that the hosts would go in with a two-goal lead until a mix up at the back for Newcastle gifted Robin Deen a goal as he struck hard and low into the bottom right corner after a one-on-one scenario with the Toon keeper.

The visitors started the second half the brighter when Callum Roberts’s free-kick sailed inches over the bar from 18-yards out on 52 minutes. Walton was at full stretch on his right to ensure the top corner was covered. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Albion looked to make it four when Jimmy Muitt slid the ball into Will Collar’s path, subsequently providing the centre-half a chance on goal which cannoned off of the left post and behind for a goal-kick.
After an end-to-end game, it was Brighton & Hove Albion who sealed all three points to give them a victory for their final game at the Amex this season.
