Look back at a memorable Albion strike against Bristol City.
Garry Nelson
Brighton 3-2 Bristol City
(13 February 1988, Division Three, Goldstone Ground)The player
Garry Nelson joined Albion from Plymouth Argyle in July 1987. With his knack of finding the net, he formed a deadly partnership with Kevin Bremner in an unexpected promotion campaign in the 1987/88 season. In December 1987, Brighton lost 5-2 at Ashton Gate, but Garry’s goals ensured the Seagulls avenged that defeat in February.
The goal
With Albion already 2-0 up, the sharpshooting striker hit one of the best goals seen at the Goldstone. Nelson hit the sweetest of 25-yard efforts with his left foot in the 57th minute. It gave Robins keeper John Vaughan no chance as it sailed into the top corner of the net.

Why this goal mattered
It was Gary’s 25th goal of the season. It proved to be the winner despite City pulling two goals back. As a result, it sealed Albion’s first home win in Division Two for two months, starting the momentum that ultimately led to a quick return to Division Two.And now
Nelson went on to play for Charlton and Torquay. With each of these clubs, he also wrote a book (Left Foot Forward and Left Foot in the Grave). After retiring from the game in 1997, he went on to become commercial executive of the PFA. He still plays football, for Southend’s and Charlton’s veteran sides.
