Garry Nelson's great goal versus Brentford.
Garry Nelson
Brentford 0-2 Albion
(14 November 1987, FA Cup 1st Round, Griffin Park)The player
Garry Nelson was a left-winger who had spells with Southend, Swindon and Plymouth. In July 1987, Albion boss Barry Lloyd brought the 26-year-old to the Goldstone Ground in a £72,500 deal. He was used as an out-and-out striker alongside Kevin Bremner in the celebrated 1987/88 campaign.
The goal
In the 68th minute, Nelson dispossessed Keith Jones just inside the Brentford half before going on a magical run where he bamboozled five defenders. With strike partner Bremner screaming for the ball, Nelson then unleashed a rocket of a shot that tore into the top corner. Keeper Gary Phillips was well beaten at the near post.*

Why this goal mattered
It was one of 32 goals Garry scored in 1987/88. While it wasn’t the most important goal of Nelson’s career, he rated it as his best. The goal goes down in folklore as one of the greatest in Albion history. Sadly, no TV cameras recorded footage of it.And now
Nelson went on to play for Charton and Torquay. With each of these clubs, he also wrote a book (Left Foot Forward and Left Foot in the Grave). After retiring from the game in 1997, he went on to become commercial executive of the PFA. He then went on to work for ITV Digital, and has done some coaching in Hong Kong.
