The player
Centre-forward Bill Curry scored 34 goals in 80 matches for Newcastle, despite having to compete with the likes of legendary Jackie Milburn at St James’ Park. He joined Second Division Brighton in a club-record deal of £13,000 in 1959.
The goal
Before a 32,864 crowd at Arsenal’s stadium in an FA Cup fourth round second replay, Curry impudently lobbed goalkeeper Roy Ironside in the 86th minute, giving the Millers’ keeper no chance.*

The goal completed Curry’s hat-trick. It also put the seal on a rout, with Brighton winning 6-0 in one of the club’s most memorable FA Cup victories.And now
Bill became unsettled and after a transfer request, he joined Derby County for £12,000 in September 1960.* He went on to play for Mansfield, Chesterfield and Boston in an impressive career where he hit 178 goals in 394 matches. He also managed Boston and Sutton. He died in 1990 at the age of 54.
