Relive a memorable strike against the Royals
Paul Brooker
Reading 1-2 Brighton
(4th April 2003, Division One, Madejski Stadium)
The player
Paul Brooker was a right-winger who could also play on the left, as and when needed. He began his career at Fulham after being loaned out to Brighton in 2000, with whom he signed permanently for that year.
The goal
After a backpass to Reading keeper Marcus Hahnemann was penalised, Brooker retrieved the ball. Bobby Zamora quickly took a free-kick before the Reading defence could get ready, and Brooker slotted the ball into the empty net. Cue pandemonium.

Why this goal mattered
It put Albion 1-0 up in the club’s brave fight to avoid the drop. The Seagulls eventually won 2-1 in one of the highlights of the season. And now
Brooker’s form led to him being signed by Premier League side Leicester City but was given little opportunity to show his ability. He then joined Reading on loan in 2004, and the deal was made permanent later that season. After a spell with Brentford, the winger went into non-league football, playing for Chertsey, Havant & Waterlooville and Dorking Wanderers.
