Mauricio Taricco believes that the Seagulls are in control of their own destiny with seven games remaining this season, but will need to be strong mentally during the Championship run-in.
Albion’s assistant manager experienced reaching and missing out on the play-offs during his time in the second tier at Ipswich Town and knows what is required to make the top six.
Taricco told seagulls.co.uk, “We need to be a little bit stronger mentally, to impose our game even more than we are doing, and that will come.
“It’s about knowing your game, imposing it and if you are not on form, it’s about adapting and showing you can fight for it. That’s why football is a mixture of things.
“When you are dominating you don’t need to be as aggressive but when you’re not dominating you need to be a little more aggressive than normal to change things around and to get things going your way.
“It’s information we put to the players and hopefully they will pick it up, then in time they will do it themselves. When they are on the pitch they need to make the decisions. We can only help them out during the week, before the game, after the game and during half-time.
“We can shout a bit during the game but they need to know that there are moments when they need to react. They need to learn to deal with situations and be cool.
“We are in a good position and we need to look at beating Charlton. If we do that we will be in an even better position but in the Championship you never know. We will have to see if we can all cope with the pressure that comes with being in the play-off positions.
“The experience we have in the team now should help us but I don’t like to talk too much about the future because no-one knows what will happen.”
The Seagulls have four home fixtures remaining, starting with back-to-back Amex games this week, and Taricco has emphasised the importance of these games while calling for added control away from home.
“I’m really confident that we can stay in the play-offs but feeling it and actually doing it is a different story. We can beat anyone in this league and we have a few games at home which will be key.
“We have the quality and the team to get there but a lot can happen in this league. You can be dominating the game and controlling possession then from nowhere the opposition scores a goal and you’re losing and the dynamics change.
“It’s about us coping with home and away games and being strong mentally. We need to put in the same performances with the same enthusiasm and same desire home and away.
“Just because we are at home with more people watching we give a little extra but it shouldn’t be like that. We should play the same home and away.”
