Over 80 schools from across Sussex took part in the first ever Albion in the Community (AITC) Schools Showcase Conference at the Amex yesterday.

The event was organised to highlight the charity’s new and improved schools education programme that aims to support and complement the work of local schools. AITC currently work with over 200 schools across the county and 1,800 pupils complete AITC’s cross-curricular courses every year. Another 1,500 pupils with disability and additional needs participate in the charity’s school sports programmes annually.Teachers and pupils from infant, primary and secondary schools were greeted at the stadium by club mascot Gully and took part in special taster sessions of AITC’s various education programmes which include PE, school sport, numeracy and literacy projects and language programmes before embarking on tours of the stadium to learn more about the educational potential of the Amex.

With a new schools’ National Curriculum starting in September, the focus of the new AITC programme will be placed on helping primary schools with the compulsory introduction of languages and computing for pupils.AITC are also proactively working in partnership with local organisations to expand its successful healthy lifestyle programmes, aimed at addressing health inequalities in the region.
AITC’s Head of Schools, Mel Dunn, told seagulls.co.uk, “This is the first time our offer to schools has been coordinated and showcased to help schools better understand the breadth of what we are able to deliver for them.
There is huge interest in the club and the iconic stadium across the city and the county, which we are using to engage young people both in and out of the classroom. This was reflected by the overwhelming interest shown by schools at yesterday’s event.”
