Youth team coach Simon Rusk has praised the youth and development players for their impressive showing against VSC Guimaraes.Albion’s on-tour development squad is filled with Rusk’s youth players and the side defeated VSC 2-0 in their first friendly game of the training camp.
Rusk told seagulls.co.uk, “We definitely got a good effort and work rate from the players which aids there fitness levels in this period of pre-season, and we also had some really encouraging periods of play, both defensively and in an attacking sense.
“We got a positive result and won the game 2-0 which is pleasing but more importantly we are looking for fitness levels and performance.
“Whenever you come to another country you are going to come up against a different style of play, but we were very pleased with how we coped with how they played and also how we played within our own team shape.
“Whenever you represent your club - especially our club because we are a proud club with a brand and an identity – it is not just what we do on the pitch but what we do off it.
“The players were a credit to themselves on the pitch but attitude-wise all week they have been excellent and they certainly represented the club well.”
Rusk is now urging his young charges to take the experiences of the training camp and use them to enhance their footballing careers.
“I will make sure the boys take this week and use it in any other experience they come across in their football career. I also want to make sure they understand how pre-season works in terms of looking after yourself, and that the games are as important as training, but both are equally important in terms of getting fit.
“It has been a great experience for the players to come away and play in a stadium against some technically good opposition.”
