Albion's development squad earned a point away at Barnet in a 1-1 draw...
Solly March earned Albion’s development squad a point at Barnet today but that was the least Luke Williams’ side deserved in an impressive performance.March’s exquisite finish levelled the scores after Albion had fallen behind just after the break and Torbjorn Agdestein also saw a penalty saved in a frantic second half.
Still reeling from the heavy 4-1 loss to Swansea at the Amex, Williams’ side appeared cautious in the opening 45 minutes despite controlling possession for the majority of the half.
And just into the second period the hosts took the lead against the run of play. The Seagulls defence failed to clear and Barnet capitalised to take the advantage.
But the goal sprung Albion into life as they came roaring back and the contest should have been level sooner than it was.
An outstanding ball from Anton Rodgers picked out Charlie Oatway’s perfectly timed run, and the midfielder was brought down by the Bees’ keeper to earn Brighton a penalty.
Norweigen Agdestein stepped up but saw his spot-kick pushed away as the keeper guessed right.
The miss was swiftly forgotten though, as March cut in from the right onto his favoured left foot to strike a terrific low drive into the bottom corner to level the scores.
Williams’ resurgent side pushed for a winner and Agdestein and March were both denied by some excellent goalkeeping before Shamir Goodwin saw an effort cleared off the line.
A much improved showing pleased Williams although he felt the result did not reflect his side’s performance. He told seagulls.co.uk, “We looked the better side but we were a bit cautious early on. You could tell there were nerves after the Swansea game because their pride was hurt by that result and the boys did not want to concede.
“So there was a bit of hesitancy to play that final ball. Strangely their goal was a blessing in disguise as once we went behind the shackles came off and we looked very hungry. When the goal went in the boys didn’t want a repeat of Swansea and they fought for everything and created so many chances.
“Having lost some of our more experienced players it is now a time for some of the newer members to step up, and a lot of them did that today. It was a very good response in terms of performance but disappointed not to get a clean sheet or a win that we deserved. Another good sign was youth players Hunt, Harris and Deen came on and they all looked hungry to impress.”
Albion: Ankergren; McGiveron (Hunt 70), Sampayo, Jones, Akubuine: Rodgers, Richards (Harris 70), Oatway; March, Goodwin (Deen 70), Agdestein. Subs Not Used:* East (GK).
