Gus Poyet has called for the 1-0 win over Hull City to become a turning point as Albion look for a strong finish to the season.
The Seagulls boss and players took risks to pass a stern test at the Amex against a Tigers side chasing an automatic promotion place, and he felt that his side has set the standard for the season finale.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “This could be a key moment in the season and we will see how important on Tuesday. We played four games away but it makes a big different playing at home. We have a few homes games coming up so it’s there for us.
“For the first time before the game we showed the players exactly where they would move to in the table if they won. It was an extra bit. We were ninth and they knew that we could go seventh. It was important for them to see that because when you play at 3pm a lot can change that you don’t know about.
“The second half was very open. It was not our normal style but we have nothing to lose now so we need to go and try to win every game. It’s not the way that I would like my teams to play every week but because of the situation that we are in we need to win games somehow. We took big risks but it worked.
“It’s totally up to us now and the key is for us is to be there or there abouts so that we can make a final sprint. We are playing teams who are around us so we have some big games which will be like six-pointers.”
The Uruguayan’s goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak was named Man of the Match by Sky Sports after he made world-class saves during the second half with the scores still goalless and Poyet heaped praise on the Polish stopper after the game.
“Today was about the keeper making some very important saves and some real quality at the other end of the pitch with Vicente.
“We put the confidence in Tomasz and we decided to play him so that he could stand up and show us what he’s all about. He did that and made the result for us.
“The clean sheet was very important but it’s credit to the goalkeeper for making some very good saves. It rubs off on everyone else too.
“We could have changed him because he made a mistake at Birmingham then he was not at his best last weekend. The other keepers are also pushing for a chance but we talked in the week and we put our confidence in him.
“He reacted well in the week and his performance today helped us a lot.”
Poyet also explained how happy he was with Vicente’s match-winning contribution, adding, “I was tempted to start him but I’m delighted that I didn’t.
“You need Vicente when it’s a bit open so that he can get between the lines and run with the ball. That worked very well for him in the second half. I’m so pleased for him because he has had some sad times. He celebrated his goal like he was an excited little kid.”
