Brighton & Hove Albion women’s manager James Marrs has warned his side to guard against complacency when they face Copsewood on Sunday, kick-off 2pm.

The Seagulls beat the newly-promoted team 3-1 on the opening day of the season and the Coventry-based side have only recorded one win in their nine league games so far, but Marrs insists this has not entered his mind going into the match.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “They’re a well-organised and physical side, so I can see it being a fairly tight game.“I am expecting a different match to the last time we played them. No-one likes losing twice to the same side and I’d imagine they’re more used to the standard of this league now.

“They are striving to get points on board and there will be no better feeling than beating us. It will definitely be at the forefront of their minds and they’ll do everything they can to get three points on Sunday.

“All I ask of the girls is that they work hard and listen to the instructions. We will have to roll our sleeves up and dig deep, but we showed that in the last game we played [against Newcastle].”

The Albion manager has been encouraged by the competitiveness in the Premier League Southern Division so far, with just three points separating the top five sides in the table.

“The standard of the league is obviously rising and you’d expect the competition to be tough. We’re halfway through the season now and some teams have still got a couple of games in hand, but I’m glad that the league is so competitive as it keeps you on your toes.

“It’s good that five or six teams are challenging and it means that the league is in a healthy state.”

Marrs’s side also found out their latest opponents in the FA Cup and Premier League Cup after the respective draws were made earlier this week.

The Seagulls will face Julian Dicks’s West Ham United side in the FA Cup second round on 11th January before taking on Charlton Athletic for the third time this season at Culver Road on 1st February.

“We haven’t played West Ham yet so we’ve gathered some notes on them and watched them play.* It is a tough draw and anything can happen in a one-off game in the FA Cup.

“They’re a well-organised team, which you’d expect from a Julian Dicks side, and it will be down to who performs better on the day.

“We’re also quite happy to have drawn Charlton at home[in the Premier League Cup] and that we don’t have to make another long trip like we did for Newcastle.*

“All of the sides remaining in the competition are in the top half of their respective divisions, barring Nottingham Forest, so it’s going to be another difficult game.

“But we have had a couple of good games against Charlton already this season, so we’re quite looking forward to that one.”
