Brighton & Hove Albion women’s manager James Marrs believes there is still room for improvement despite the side’s 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic on Sunday. The Albion manager was pleased with the scoreline, but feels his team did not reach the targets which he had set prior to the game.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “I’m really pleased with the scoreline, but I was not particularly impressed with the performance. The players worked really hard and their work off the ball was absolutely superb, but I felt our overall play on the ball was quite poor.
“The result is the most important thing for us - and it’s nice to win 5-1 against a team as good as Charlton - but I wasn’t pleased with some of the things we’ve done in the game.
“We switched off on a number of occasions and gave them opportunities to get back into the game, which for one reason or another they didn’t take. We conceded a sloppy goal on the day, but on reflection Charlton probably deserved a couple more goals.
“We’ll be addressing these problems next week. It is all about setting ourselves high standards because we set our targets with what we want to do in each game. We didn’t manage to get our targets out on Sunday.”

Marrs praised the performance of goalkeeper Faye Baker for her fantastic penalty save to keep Albion 1-0 ahead at the time, redeeming herself for the foul that led to the spot-kick being awarded.“Faye has pulled out an unbelievable penalty save to keep the tide of the game in our favour.
“We’ll analyse what the problems were which led to the penalty. There were two or three problems before it got down to the 18-yard box, so it’s not necessarily Faye’s fault that the penalty was given.
“Yes she could have gone with her hands instead of her feet, but she made up for her error and that’s all that I ask of my players.
“There are a lot of areas to work on after the game today, but I feel like we’re gradually improving and that’s the most important thing.”*
