CHRIS HUGHTON admitted his side lacked a clinical edge in last night’s goalless draw with Ipswich Town, but praised the Tractor Boys for the way they stifled his side’s attacking threat.

The Brighton & Hove Albion manager felt his forward players were not at their best and that the game was destined to be a goalless draw.

He said, “Chances were very limited and as it went on, the game became a bit of a stand-off as such. It looked like one of those games where there would be no goals.

“What we have been able to do is score a goal when these games get tighter. We opted to go with two upfront and when you do that, there are pluses and minuses.
*
“Sometimes you give away a bit of midfield possession, but you’d like to think it gives you a platform to score goals.
*
“You need a bit more from a front four, but you’ve got to give credit to Ipswich who worked and pressed very hard.”

The Seagulls now head into Saturday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday without both the suspended Dale Stephens and the injured Beram Kayal, and Hughton emphasised the importance of having good strength in depth.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down now, it’s a very tough place to go [Hillsborough]. At this moment, we’re probably going to be without Kayal and Stephens.

“Fortunately for us, we brought in [Oliver] Norwood and [Steve] Sidwell in the summer and they’re two good acquisitions for us.”

MICK McCARTHY was delighted with the way his Ipswich Town side acquitted themselves against one of the Championship’s top teams, as they maintained their unbeaten home league record this season.

The Tractor Boys have held Norwich, Aston Villa and Brighton to draws at Portman Road this season, which he highlighted as a big positive.He told Ipswich Player HD, “It was a fair result against a good side.

“It was a solid performance and if you’ve got that and are not conceding goals, then it gives you the platform to build on.
“We’ve had Villa, Norwich and Brighton here and none have beaten us and I expect them all to be in the top six come the end of the season.”

Despite producing a defensively resolute display, McCarthy is demanding a bit more from his side going forward.*
“We want to try and play the ball around and have more thrust, be a bit more dynamic and create more chances. We will get there if we are solid as a team.
“We have some creative players to come back, Didz [David McGoldrick], Jonny Williams. Bish [Teddy Bishop] as well and some of our players are carrying knocks. The international break will help them and they will be a bit sharper.

“Tom Lawrence was a bright spark for us and Josh Emmanuel was excellent. I was really pleased with him. He defended well and got forward when he could.”
