The Capital One Cup gets started this week and Brighton & Hove Albion host Cheltenham Town in the first round, a side that the Seagulls have had a lot of joy over in the past.Town have only managed two wins over Albion in 16 meetings and it took the Robins 66 years to find score their first goal against the blue-and-white stripes.
Brighton boasts a win rate of 50 per cent over the Gloucestershire outfit with the latest victory coming at the Withdean in February 2008, and if the Robins are to make the second round of the League Cup they will have to claim their first away victory over the Seagulls.

It was a sign of things to come as the Seagulls swept aside their visitors back in September 2000. Albion began to pave the way for the first of their back-to-back league titles as Matthew Wicks, Paul Watson and Bobby Zamora fired Brighton to a comfortable win.

Late drama was the story when the sides met twice in the League within ten days in February 2008. Two goals in added on time had seen Cheltenham claim only their second ever win over Albion when the clubs met at Whaddon Road, but the Seagulls exacted revenge of the Robins just en days later at Withdean. Town looked set to claim a league double over Brighton thanks to Steven Brooker’s third minute goal but the blue-and-white stripes mustered a late rally of their own. Glenn Murray pulled Albion level on 80 minutes before Joel Lynch stole the points two minutes from time.Albion 3 Cheltenham 3

A classic contest was played out at Withdean with a tale of the two Murrays, as the late show continued to be a theme. A blistering start saw three goals in seven minutes with Glenn Murray on the scoresheet after 60 seconds before Cheltenham immediately hit back through Scott Murray to make it 1-1 after just two minutes. It was Glenn Murray who then put Brighton ahead on seven minutes before his opponent namesake restored parity on the stroke of half time. The Seagulls were soon ahead again as their own Murray completed his hat-trick but despite the Robins losing Josh Payne to a second bookable offence they still managed to come away with a point thanks to Andy Gallinagh’s injury-time strike.
