Albion hold the slight upper hand in meetings between the two sides, with 31 victories compared to 25 for Brentford, while the teams have shared the spoils on 12 occasions over the years.
The Seagulls have enjoyed hosting Brentford in recent years and are unbeaten in their last four meetings on the south coast, recording three victories and one draw.
The last victory for the West Londoners in this fixture was back in October 2001, when goals from Martin Rowlands and Ivar Ingimarsson secured all three points for the Bees at Withdean, but this weekend will be the Brentford’s first visit to the Amex.

Kazenga LuaLua’s 78th minute strike gave Albion all three points against a struggling Brentford side on their way to the League One title. The midfielder rifled home a strike from just outside the box from an Elliott Bennett corner to extend Albion’s unbeaten run to six games. Brentford also had a chance to snatch the points themselves when Sam Wood’s left-footed shot cannoned off the crossbar, while the Seagulls had a shout for a penalty turned down after Craig Woodman appeared to pull back Ashley Barnes in the second half. Former Albion striker Nicky Forster could have broken the deadlock in Brentford’s favour, after heading wide of the post after a cross from Myles Weston, but the West Londoners left the south coast empty-handed.

Stoppage-time strikes from Adam Virgo and Nicky Forster earned Albion a resounding 3-0 victory over Brentford. Virgo and Forster dispelled the nerves inside the Withdean after adding to Glenn Murray’s 34th minute opener. Murray opened the scoring with a header at the near post from Elliott Bennett’s free kick, before Virgo effectively killed the game off as a contest in the first minute of added-on time when his header rebounded in-off the far post. Matters worsened for Brentford when Alan Bennett was shown a second yellow card for a deliberate handball inside the area and Forster stepped up to score Albion’s third in the sixth minute of injury time.

Richard Carpenter’s 56th minute strike was enough to secure a fourth consecutive home victory for Albion and maintain their push for a play-off place. The midfielder was teed up for a strike from distance by Nathan Jones and unleashed an unstoppable 25-yard drive past debutant Bees keeper Stuart Nelson. Nelson made it a debut to forget when he was sent off three minutes from time after fouling Jake Robinson. The West Londoners were then forced to end the match with an outfield player in goal, as manager Wally Downes had already used up his three substitutes.
