Brighton & Hove Albion’s new assistant manager Colin Calderwood is thrilled to be back in football and is relishing the prospect of linking up alongside Chris Hughton once again.Calderwood has a long history with the current Albion manager, as the pair were both at Tottenham Hotspur between 1993 and 1999 before going on to work together at Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Norwich City in recent years.

He said, “I’m delighted; it’s almost a year since we left Norwich and it’s been a frustrating time. Football’s always been my life, so to be involved in it really is the thing that keeps you ticking along and I’m looking forward to getting back into work.

“But the fact that I’m working again is not the most important thing; it’s about to trying to help the club.”

The 50-year-old explained that part of his role will involve acting as a sounding board for Hughton and to provide a link between the manager and the rest of the backroom and coaching staff.

“It says in the title that I’m here to assist the manager and make sure what he wants has been followed through, not just within the first-team squad but among the staff as well.

“It’s really about creating an environment within the club, which a lot of people forget about, ensuring that everybody remains focused in the backroom staff."I will try to underline any problems that do arise and sometimes see them slightly earlier or in a different way; these are all the things that you must do as an assistant manager.”
Calderwood has been blown away by the facilities at the club and feels that the sky is the limit in terms of what can be achieved, but insists the immediate priority is to ensure Albion maintain their Championship status.
“The infrastructure looks fantastic and obviously this season they’ve had a bit more of a struggle than they’ve had in the last couple of years, but you can see why the club has progressed from the lower divisions and they look as if they’ve built it in a super way that will stand the test of time.
“The ultimate goal is Premier League football, but the situation is what it is at the minute and we’ve got to make sure we get enough points to stay in the division.
“The difference between being in this situation and being halfway or even on the edge of the play offs can be quite small and depends on lots of different factors.
"I’ve got to try and understand what those factors are at the minute and I’m sure there have been some unlucky moments. We’ve got to try and turn those unlucky moments into ones of greater fortune for us.”
